Carved out of France and Germany in 1839, Luxembourg has three official languages: French, German and Luxembourgish. Luxembourgish is closely related to German, but isn't close enough to be classed as a dialect. All three languages are taught and used in everyday life. In fact, all three are used at various stages of a law's passage in the country's parliament. English and Portuguese are also widely spoken. This means that the average Luxembourger is normally fluent in at least four languages.

Despite its size, Luxembourg packs a lot in. It's broadly divided into two regions: Oeslig and Guttland. Oeslig (the north) is largely rural, despite the country's size. It's home to open landscapes, fields, small Germanic-style villages and acre after acre of nature reserves.
The southern two-thirds of the country is home to the Guttland region, where rivers intertwine with cities, large towns and the capital: Luxembourg City. Most students, home and international, find themselves in Guttland.
Luxembourgers are also known for being welcoming of those from elsewhere. Almost half of the population wasn't born there, with about one-in-seven people originating from Portugal. Luxembourgers will happily teach you one of the languages - particularly Luxembourgish - and help you navigate the culture and nuances of the country.
Luxembourg is a country that is packed with adventure and opportunities, all in a pocket size. This guide will tell you what you need to know about what it's like to study there - and how to get there.
